8 September: If You Take a Mouse to School
The Concord Bookshop, Concord, MA
When: 3.00 PM
Location: In-store
He's back! The persistent little mouse from the New York Times #1 best-seller
If You Take a Mouse to the Movies and If You give a Mouse a Cookie
is back for his first day of school in If
You Take a Mouse to School. But beware, if you take a mouse to school,
he'll ask you for your lunch box. When you give him your lunch box, he'll want
a sandwich to go in it. Then he'll need a notebook and some pencils. He'll probably
want to share your backpack, too....
Only prolific children's author Laura Numeroff (16 books for children) and
best-selling illustrator Felicia Bond could make school this much fun! And only
Gary Lawton could bring this book so vividly to life. Back by popular demand
(he read aloud from If You Take a Mouse to the Movies during a similar
event at the Bookshop last December), Gary promises to make this an event that's
sure to tame the pre-school jitters for even the most reluctant new scholar.

July 28 - August 3
29 July: Joelle Fraser -- The Territory of Men
Where: Capitola Book Cafe, Capitola, CA
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: In-store
The
daughter of a beautiful flower child and an alcoholic writer, Joelle Fraser
(The
Territory of Men), grew up in the wild drug and music-filled era of
the '60s and '70s in California and Hawaii. She had no bedtime and no boundaries,
but she did have "dads" in abundance as her mother went from boyfriend to husband
to boyfriend, torn between the traditional role of mother and the new freedoms
of the "me" generation. What Joelle learned is that a woman's life is played
out on men's territory: men arrive, they make life matter, and then they go
away. This clear-eyed memoir captures a childhood with no center in vivid, frank
writing and illustrates the legacy a mother passes on to a restless girl now
grown.

she published Nine Parts of Desire, an engrossing -- and sometimes enraging
-- account of women in the Middle East under Islam. Recently reissued in paperback,
it has become a book group favorite. A few years later, she came out with Foreign
Correspondence, a memoir based on the letters Brooks exchanged as a child
with fellow letter-writers in the Middle East, Europe, and America. Now Brooks
brings us Year of Wonders, a novel set in an English village during the
plague year 1666. Come hear Brooks talk about this her latest work, a book that
The New York Times Book Review has described as "a glimpse into the strangeness
of history."
