Book of the Year

The Book Sense Book of the Year Award -- formerly known as the "ABBY Award" -- was inaugurated on June 2 at BookExpo America 2000. Winners are chosen by independent booksellers across the country who vote for the titles they most enjoyed handselling to their customers in the previous year.

In 2001, two new categories were added to make four in all: Adult Fiction, Adult Non-fiction, Children's Literature, and Illustrated Children's Book.

The winners were announced at the 2001 BEA in Chicago. Congratulations to all the winners!

The Red TentRed Tent

Anita Diamant

For Diamant, winning the BSBY was close enough to her "Academy Awards fantasy" to make her incredibly happy, and she declared she was going to "thank everyone she ever met." That done, she cited a line from her book: "My heart is a ladle of sweet water brimming over." Ah.

In a story based on the Book of Genesis, Jacob's daughter, Dinah, shares her perspectives on the origins of modern religious practices and sexual politics, eager to impart the lessons she has learned from her father's wives.

Ian Falconer (Illustrator)
Winner!

Falconer also wins the prize for Most Unusual Adjective for Independent Booksellers: salmon-like. He said, "The other winners have already used up the adjectives, so all I can think of to say is that independent booksellers are like salmon swimming upstream. Except you don't spawn and die at the top, you just keep swimming upstream for years and years and years and years."

Whether starting the day, enjoying the beach, or at bedtime, Olivia is a feisty pig with too much energy for her own good!
