Originally
known as the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize, the Kiriyama Prize
is given annually to one fiction and one nonfiction book that "contribute
to greater understanding and cooperation among the peoples and nations
of the Pacific Rim." A cash award of $30,000 is shared equally
between the two winning authors.
The
Kiriyama Prize is co-sponsored and administered by the Kiriyama
Pacific Rim Institue and the University of San Francisco's Center
for the Pacific Rim. "Pacific Rim" is defined as including
countries in the North Pacific, Southeast Asia, the Southwest Pacific,
the western shores of the Americas, and the Indian subcontinent.
Although
named after Reverend Seiyu Kiriyama, the president and founder of
the Buddhist Association Agon Shu, the Kiriyama Prize does not claim
to have a specific religious or political agenda.
