Lambda Literary Award -- The Winners! |
|
|
The
Lambda Literary Award is presented by the Lambda Literary Foundation,
a nonprofit organization supporting gay and lesbian literature. They also
publish the Lambda Book Report, a monthly book review journal,
and The James White Review, a gay men's literary quarterly.
This year,
double nominees include Nicola Griffith and Stephen Pagel's, Bending
the Landscape: Horror, Erika Lopez's Hoochie
Mama: The Other White Meat, and Vanessa Sheridan's Crossing
Over: Liberating the Transgendered Christian.
The 14th
Annual Awards were awarded on Friday, May 2nd, at BookExpo
America in New York City. Over 300 authors, booksellers, editors,
publishers, readers and industry professionals gathered for the glittering
event, hosted by New York poet Emanuel Xavier and featuring a hilarious
and heartfelt monologue by Bridgebuilder winner Margaret Cho, whose parents
were also present at the event. Her book, I'm
the One I Want, has recently been released in paperback.
This is the
second Lammy for Chicago Tribune reporter Achy Obejas, whose first
novel,
Memory Mambo, won the lesbian fiction award in 1996.
Days of Awe is a sexy, funny and deeply moving book, exploring
the life of an assimilated Cuban-American woman who discovers her Jewish
heritage. Gurganus' The
Practical Heart, a collection of four novellas, continues
the exploration of his North Carolina past begun in wildly popular The
Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All and continued
in the collection of stories, White
People.
There will
be readings around the country to celebrate Check out the winners -- and
the nominees -- at your local independent bookstore today! (See our Events
Calendar for local listings.)
