Now
anyone can peruse one of the world's most important books: a Gutenberg
Bible owned by the University of Texas' Ransom Center has been digitally
scanned in its entirety, and posted on the Internet.
The Gutenberg
Bible is usually acknowledged as the first major Western book to be produced
using a printing press -- a process invented by Johann Gutenberg in the
15th century. Valued at $20 million, only 48 copies of the historically
significant tome exist today. The Ransom Center, a world-renowned cultural
archive, acquired its copy of the Bible in 1978, and began scanning the
book's linen pages in June 2002.
Gutenberg
Bibles in England and Japan are already on the web, but Ransom Center
officials claim their copy is the most interesting: The Texas Gutenberg
endured centuries of heavy use from German monks, who filled the already
elaborate book with intricate notes and markings.

Gutenberg:
How One Man Remade the World with Words
By John
Man
Gutenberg's printing press changed everything forever. In Gutenberg,
accomplished historian Man chronicles the compelling story behind the metalsmith-turned-publisher's
incredible decades-long struggle to turn his dream into reality. Constantly
rebelling against the wishes of others and always in search of capital,
Gutenberg endured a painful series of monetary, legal, and emotional setbacks
before completing the first printing press. Man explores Gutenberg's complex
motivations, and includes a detailed description of the press itself. |

The
Justification of Johann Gutenberg
By Blake
Morrison
A careful and accurate portrayal of life during the Middle Ages, this elegant
and sweeping fictional account of Gutenberg's life follows the genius inventor
from his early upbringing to his later triumph as the creator of the printing
press. As a figure who sacrifices everything -- love, livelihood, religion,
friendship -- in the pursuit of a single idea, Morrison's Gutenberg cuts
a fascinating and tragic figure. |

How
to Start and Run a Small Book Publishing Company: A Small Business Guide
to Self-Publishing and Independent Publishing
By Peter
I. Hupalo
Curious but clueless would-be independent publishers have many enthusiastic
and insightful guides to help them get started, but not many "How To Publish"
books go into the kind of financial detail Hupalo's does. While covering
such publishing standards as printing, promotion, pricing, and inventory,
Hupalo thoughtfully includes detailed information on less-often-discussed
subjects like taxes, accounting, trademarks, copyrights, and (gulp) distributor
bankruptcy. |

Abraham:
A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths
By Bruce
Feiler
In this spiritual/travel memoir, Walking
the Bible author Feiler traverses the globe in search of any surviving
evidence of Abraham: the ancient religious figure who features prominently
in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While exploring different societies,
cultures, archeological digs, and ancient caves, Feiler discusses the unifying
role Abraham plays in the three faiths. How these religions can be so similar
and yet so antagonistic towards each other is only one of many engaging
questions Feiler poses in his timely and poignant book. |

Lamb:
The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
By Christopher
Moore
A March/April 2003 Book Sense 76 Pick! Jesus Christ's bosom buddy, Levi
bar Alpheus -- better known as Biff -- is resurrected in modern times
by an angel in order to explain what happened during Jesus' "missing"
years.
A Book Sense
bookseller says about Lamb: "This is, by far, the funniest book
I've read in quite awhile. This was a hit in our store in hardcover, and
now that it's in paperback, we'll put this into the hands of many more
readers." -- Ginnie Traver, Bishop Bookstore, Bishop, CA
